Music Exam Preparation
A graded examination is not the point of learning music. But it is an honest measure of where you actually are — and for many students, that clarity is worth having.
Cornucopia is an ABRSM-affiliated academy, and we prepare students for both ABRSM and Trinity College London examinations. Which board suits you depends on how you learn, what you want to play, and what you are working toward.
ABRSM
The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music sets the international standard used in over 90 countries. Its syllabus is structured and thorough: set pieces, scales and arpeggios, sight-reading, and aural tests, with theory required from Grade 6 upward.
Cornucopia is ABRSM-affiliated, and ABRSM forms the backbone of our teaching.
Trinity College London
Trinity offers greater flexibility in repertoire and in how a candidate builds their exam — with more choice over technical work and supporting tests. Students who want a wider stylistic range, or who prefer a less prescriptive route, often find Trinity suits them well.
We prepare students for Trinity practical and theory examinations across our subjects.
What the examiner is listening for
Parents often assume a music exam is “play three pieces.” It is four separate skills, and marks are lost most often in the two nobody practises.
Pieces
Three pieces from the syllabus, chosen across contrasting styles and periods. This is the largest share of the marks, and the part every student practises.
Scales and arpeggios
Played from memory, at tempo, in the keys the grade requires — major, minor, broken chords, and at higher grades, extended patterns. Examiners hear evenness and control here more clearly than anywhere else in the exam.
Sight-reading
A short piece the student has never seen, after roughly thirty seconds of preparation. This is trained by reading new music every week, not by cramming in the final month.
Aural tests
Clapping the pulse, identifying changes, singing back a phrase, describing what was heard. Students who sing in our choir are noticeably stronger here.
Most students lose marks in sight-reading and aural — the two components that cannot be crammed. We build them from the first term, not the last one.
Which board is right for you?
There is no better board — only a better fit. In practice:
- ABRSM rewards students who thrive with structure, and is the more widely recognised name in India
- Trinity rewards students who want flexibility in repertoire and exam construction
If you are unsure, we will talk it through with you before you commit. Choosing the wrong board is a slow way to lose motivation, and it is easily avoided.

The Grade 5 Theory requirement
This catches families every year. Under ABRSM rules, a student cannot enter a Grade 6, 7 or 8 practical exam without first passing ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory, or Grade 5 Practical Musicianship, or a Grade 5 jazz instrumental exam.
It is not a formality. A student who has reached Grade 6 standard on their instrument and has not passed Grade 5 Theory simply cannot be entered, however well they play.
We teach Music Theory as a subject in its own right, Grades 1 through 8, and we build theory into instrumental lessons from Grade 1 so this never becomes an emergency in a student’s final year.

Exam preparation is available across piano, keyboard, guitar, violin, viola, cello, voice, and music theory — at both centres and online.
Taught by musicians who have sat these exams
Exam preparation is only as strong as the teacher’s own grasp of the standard. Every teacher below has worked through graded examinations themselves.
- Ebenezer — violin, viola, cello and music theory. Founder. Around ten years teaching, ABRSM graded, with a school and college choral background.
- Daniel Abraham — piano, keyboard and music theory. Also teaches at Baldwin Boys’ High School.
- Daniel Thotumpuri — guitar, ukulele and piano. Head of Music at SKEI, and London College of Music certified.
- Dr Latina — choir and vocals. ABRSM Grade 8 Vocals. Performed at Lincoln Center under Eric Whitacre in 2023 and at Carnegie Hall under Jonathan Griffith in 2019.
- Ketirenla — piano, keyboard and music theory. Over ten years teaching, qualified through both LCM and ABRSM.
Where exam preparation happens
Two centres in Bengaluru, and online worldwide. Sight-reading and aural work are taught in full in all three formats.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to prepare for a grade?
For most students, two to three terms per grade at the lower levels, and longer from Grade 5 upward. We do not compress this. A student pushed through a grade in a single term usually passes badly, and the gap shows up two grades later.
Does my child need to take exams at all?
No. Many of our students learn without ever sitting one, and they progress perfectly well. Exams are a useful external checkpoint, not a requirement for musicianship.
What is the minimum age?
There is no fixed minimum. Readiness matters more than age — attention span, hand size for some instruments, and the ability to sit with an unfamiliar adult for fifteen minutes. We assess this at the trial class.
Where are the exams held?
ABRSM and Trinity hold examinations at designated centres in Bengaluru on published session dates. We manage entries and inform families of dates and venues once each session is confirmed.
What is a Performance Grade?
An ABRSM format in which the student records four pieces in a single continuous take and submits the video for assessment. There are no scales, sight-reading or aural tests. It suits students who play well but find the exam room difficult.
Do you guarantee a distinction?
No, and we would be cautious of anyone who does. We enter students only when we believe they will do themselves justice, and we will tell you plainly if we think an entry is premature.
Can we start partway through a syllabus year?
Yes. We assess the student’s current standard and plan backwards from the next realistic exam session.
What do exam preparation classes cost?
